Russia has begun a planned nuclear drill
The Russian military has begun the first stage of an exercise "which includes practical training in the preparation and use of tactical nuclear weapons" in the Southern Military District, the Defense Ministry said, according to Reuters.
The exercise, which was ordered by Vladimir Putin earlier in May, involves Iskander and Kinzhal robots. It is described as a deterrent exercise in response to "provocative statements and threats by individual Western government officials".
Tactical nuclear weapons are less powerful and have a shorter range than so-called strategic nuclear weapons.
