Difficult for NATO to protect Europe's airspace in case of attack
NATO member states have access to less than five percent of the air defense capability deemed necessary to protect Eastern Europe in the event of a possible full-scale attack. This is reported by the Financial Times, which has read the defense alliance's own calculations.
As a result of the Russian invasion war in Ukraine, several European countries have drawn attention to the importance of a functioning air defense. Among other things, the Prime Ministers of Greece and Poland, Kyriakos Mitsotakis and Donald Tusk, have recently called on the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, to help develop a European air defense system.
According to the prime ministers, the air defense capacity in Europe is "a major vulnerability", writes the newspaper.

Defense capacity worries: "One of our biggest holes"
NATO diplomats spoken to by the Financial Times say that the alliance's access to air defense is inadequate.
- It is one of the biggest holes we have. We cannot deny it, says an anonymous official.
The paper has reported that NATO only has access to less than five percent of the air defense capabilities required to withstand a full-scale attack.
Another alliance official says the ability to intercept robots and airstrikes is an important part of the plan to defend Eastern Europe in the event of an attack.
- Right now we don't have it, says the official.
Britain's Ministry of Defense has previously warned that the risk of an air attack is greater than in 30 years.
