India is currently experiencing one of the worst heat waves in a long time, with temperatures reaching 49 degrees in the capital Delhi today.
The AP news agency's photographers have depicted the extreme weather, which can both be a risk to life and health - and may affect the outcome of the ongoing parliamentary election.

The Indian heat record may have been a measurement error
The Indian heat record of nearly 53 degrees recorded in Delhi earlier today may actually be a measurement error. This is reported by AFP.
"It may be due to a fault in the sensors or local factors," India's meteorological authority wrote in a statement.
The heat wave in India is nevertheless both a fact and a serious health risk, according to the authority. Confirmed temperatures in Delhi on Wednesday ranged between just over 45 and just over 49 degrees.

New heat record in India – 52.3 degrees in Delhi
A record-warm 52.3 degrees has been measured in a suburb of India's capital, Delhi, TT reports with reference to the country's weather agency.
The heat wave has resulted in red warnings for heat being issued in the country, and according to AFP, authorities are warning that 30 million Indians may face water shortages.
The previous national heat record occurred in 2016 in a desert area of Rajasthan. Then the thermometer reached 51 degrees.
