"No church bells are ringing for Le Pen and Meloni yet"
France's Marine Le Pen has reached out to Italy's Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni to form a right-wing "supergroup" in the European Parliament.
But no church bells are still ringing for Le Pen and Meloni, writes Politico in an analytical text. Rather, Meloni keeps all possibilities open.
In an analysis in German Zeit Online, Ulrich Ladurner writes that the proximity to von der Leyen gives legitimacy to Meloni, whose party has its roots in Italian neo-fascism. And von der Leyen needs Meloni if the ECR is to open up to the European right.
"Le Pen has chosen the timing of her initiative perfectly [...] She stands in the middle of the playing field and forces Meloni to take a stand."

Sources: Israeli ex-spy chief threatened ICC prosecutors
The former head of the Israeli intelligence agency Mossad, Yossi Cohen, allegedly threatened the then chief prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC) Fatou Bensouda, sources told The Guardian.
Bensouda opened a formal investigation into war crimes in the Occupied Palestinian Territories in 2021, and Cohen allegedly tried in the years leading up to it to get the prosecutor to drop the investigation — through threats and manipulation, among other things, the sources said.
A spokesperson for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu calls the allegations against Cohen false and unfounded. Both Cohen and Bensouda have chosen not to comment on the data.

The idea: Monetary policy seems to have passed the test
Although the inflation worries have not yet blown over, monetary policy seems to have passed the test. Riksbank Governor Erik Thedéen said so in a hearing at the finance committee.
The governor of the Riksbank added that inflation seems to be on the way to the target again, which speaks for a stable development in the economy over time.
- We note that the evaluators in their report believe that the monetary policy in 2023 was well balanced, he says.
