Political situation in Austria

Double blow for the chancellor: Petas also as party leader

Austria's outgoing Chancellor Karl Nehammer will not remain as party leader of the conservative Austrian People's Party (ÖVP) after the news that government talks with the country's Social Democrats have collapsed.

For the time being, the party will be led by party secretary Christian Stocker. According to Kronen Zeitung, Stocker will create calm in the party until the spring party conference.

- We will discuss this within the party and carry out an orderly transition, says Stocker.

The ÖVP was given the exploratory mission despite the party "only" becoming the second largest party in the autumn elections. This is because no party wants to cooperate with the national conservative Freedom Party, which became the largest, according to Die Presse.

It is still unclear whether there will be new elections in Austria or not. Karl Nehammer is expected to make a statement shortly.

FPÖ may take over the task – meeting this week: “New path”

Austrian President Alexander van der Bellen will meet with the national conservative party FPÖ party leader Herbert Kickl this week. The announcement comes after the government talks between Chancellor Karl Nehammer’s conservative ÖVP and the social democratic SPÖ broke down, and the question now is whether the exploratory task will be passed to Kickl.

The president says that parts of the ÖVP have opened up to cooperation with the FPÖ, and that this may have opened up “a new path”.

“If there is one thing I have learned as president, it is that new situations always arise,” he says, according to Kronen Zeitung.

The FPÖ became the largest party in the autumn elections, but the exploratory task went to Karl Nehammer. After the talks broke down this weekend, the chancellor has announced his intention to resign.
