Russian invasion The fighting

Putin's "favorite" sent to Kursk for meeting with leaders

Russian President Vladimir Putin has sent one of his favorite generals to the Russian region of Kursk where Ukraine is reported to have gone on the offensive, writes The Telegraph.

Yunus-Bek Yevkurov arrived in Kursk early on Sunday for a meeting with the region's governor Alexander Khinshtein. Yevkurov was promoted to army general, the second highest rank in the Russian army, as recently as December. At that time he was also given responsibility for organizing the activities of Russian mercenaries in African countries, which is described as a high-profile assignment.

The newspaper's commentator James Khilner writes that Putin "obviously" does not trust Russian claims that the Ukrainian attempts have been thwarted.

Ukraine is reported to have launched a new offensive in Kursk

Ukraine has launched a new offensive in the Russian Kursk region, the Russian Defense Ministry says according to Reuters. According to the ministry, Russian forces have repulsed the attacks, but major Russian military bloggers suggest that the attack took the Russians by surprise.

The Operativnye Svodki (Operational Reports) channel writes that Ukraine appears to have a large number of soldiers on its way to the region. According to the information, the fighting is currently concentrated around the village of Bolshoy Soldatskoye. Reuters has not been able to verify the information.

Volodymyr Zelensky's chief of staff, Andriy Yermak, wrote cryptically on Telegram on Sunday morning:

“Kursk region, good news. Russia gets what it deserves.”
