Crown Prince of Thailand takes refuge in five-star Hampshire hotel

The Crown Prince of Thailand has escaped the political turmoil in his own
country and is staying in a five-star hotel in the Hampshire countryside.
Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn and his 30-strong royal entourage have taken over a
wing of grade-II listed Tylney Hall in the village of Rotherwick, the Evening
Standard reported.
Prince Vajiralongkorn, the heir apparent and only son of King Bhumibol
Adulyade.
Tylney Hall, where room start at £250 a night, rising to £530 for the Duke and
Duchess Suites with four-poster beds and whirlpool baths, declined to
comment on their royal guest.
“We never discuss our guests and will not be making any comment about this,”
said a spokesman.
Scotland Yard said it did not comment on diplomatic matters.
The prince’s entourage arrived a week ago with a lorry containing a large number of personal belongings.
A marquee has been set up in the gravelled courtyard to house two top-of-the-range Mercedes, including one with the number plate, THAI 1.
Guards are stationed inside and out, closely monitoring the movements of other guests.
The prince arrived amid tight security. A fleet of cars pulled up to the front
entrance while staff locked all doors leading into the main reception,
screening the royal party from view.
A hotel employee confirmed their presence, saying: “The Thai prince is staying here and he has about 30 people with him. We have hardly seen them as they have been very private. They are staying for 10 days. I don’t think they have visited here before.”
The royal guests have kept a low profile and have not mingled with other guests although they did take dinner at the weekend. One guest said: “They have taken over a whole wing of the hotel. The place is crawling with security. I was sat next to the prince at dinner, who was eating with a lady. They were receiving a lot of attention.”
The 112-room hotel, which dates back to 1700, is set in 66 acres of gardens, woodland and lakes. Facilities include indoor and outdoor pool, glass-domed restaurant, lounge and bar.
Prince Vajiralongkorn, 61, has a reputation for living a playboy lifestyle. He was at the centre of a scandal in 2009 when an Australian TV channel obtained a video of a lavish birthday party he had thrown for his miniature poodle Foo Foo, at which Princess Srirasmi appeared wearing little more than a G-string.
US diplomatic cables released last year revealed senior Thai officials to have expressed misgivings about the suitability of the prince as a successor to his father.
