Biden: Japan is a xenophobic country
US President Joe Biden called a number of countries - including close ally Japan - xenophobic during a fundraising gala, just weeks after the countries further strengthened their cooperation. CNN reports.
The statement was part of an exposition in which Biden explained America's economic growth with the fact that the country welcomes immigrants.
- Why is China lagging economically? Why do Japan, Russia and India have problems? Because they are xenophobic. They don't want immigrants.
Afterward, White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said the president had "made a sweeping statement" about "who we are as a nation" and that immigration is in America's DNA.

The election in India
Low turnout and voter apathy threaten Modi
A lower-than-expected voter turnout, and campaign workers claiming victory early, could put a damper on India's popular Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his BJP party. This is according to analysts for Reuters.
- The declining voter turnout is mainly about apathy among party functionaries and voters, says Sanjay Sharma, BJP campaign worker in the state of Haryana.
The BJP is massively favourite, but what is at stake is getting two-thirds of the 543 seats, which would give the party significantly more room to make changes to the constitution.
In the last election, they fell short, and this year they beat the big drum with the slogan "over 400 this time". Now, however, hopes of the landslide majority predicted by polls appear to have faded, prompting Modi to fire on his core Hindu voters and urge them to go to the polls.

Political situation in Georgia
Tens of thousands participate in new protests in Georgia
For the third evening in a row, widespread protests rage in Georgia against the new "agent law", AFP reports. Tens of thousands of people participate.
As before, there are demonstrations at the parliament, but the protests have now also spilled over to Hjältetorget, where a monument to fallen Georgian soldiers stands.
The demonstrators carry placards with messages such as "no to Russia" and pictures of members of the ruling party Georgian Dream and the text "traitor".
- We have gathered to show the Kremlin's puppets that we do not accept that the government goes against the will of the Georgian people, says 27-year-old Giorgi Loladze.
The protests concern a bill that organizations with more than 20 percent foreign funding must be registered as "foreign agents". A similar law is used to silence the opposition in Russia.

Several Russian agents exposed by Norwegian police
The Norwegian security police PST has revealed several Russian intelligence agents operating in Vestland, states the county's local PST manager Torgils Lutro in an interview with NRK.
- Russia's intention may, among other things, be to prepare sabotage. They are active throughout the district and move around.
Vestland is home to Northern Europe's largest naval base, Haakonsvern, and several important oil and gas facilities.
Lutro would not disclose how many agents were exposed, but says Russian intelligence activities in Norway were stepped up after the full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
