A 12-year-old boy shot three of his classmates inside Virtuolaskolan and fled towards Helsinki.

After an hour's chase, he was arrested and had the weapon on him.

The boy has confessed and had planned the crime.

Finland  is shaken by this morning's school shooting at a primary school in Vantaa, north of Helsinki. The news has spread all over the world.

A 12-year-old student has died and two peers have been seriously injured. They are all in grade 6. The police have not commented on whether they were shot in the same room or whether the shooter moved around the premises.

The 12-year-old boy has admitted that he was armed and entered the school and shot three of his schoolmates.

Police were called to the school at 9:08 a.m. local time on Tuesday. Someone had then opened fire and at least three people were injured. Several witnesses outside the school heard the shots.

- At first I didn't understand that it was a weapon. Then a terrible scream was heard and children ran across the schoolyard, a witness told Iltalehti.

A massive police operation was launched and when the police arrived at the school the shooter had fled.

A witness told Ilta Sanomat that scores of police officers searched the surrounding area.

- It was really messy. The police drove crosswise and along the sidewalk, he says.

The police went out and urged the public to stay away from the area, to stay indoors and not to let in any unknown person.

The boy was later arrested in Helsinki and the operation was over in just over an hour and a half.

During the afternoon, the police confirmed at a press conference that the 12-year-old shooter confessed. He is too young to be punished, but according to the police, he planned the crime and it is now being investigated as murder and attempted murder, writes Ilta Sanomat.

The boy has not committed a crime before and according to the police there were no indications of what he was going to do, reports Helsingin Sanomat.

The gun belongs to a close relative of his and it was licensed. The police do not yet know how the boy got hold of the weapon.
