At least ten dead in heavy downpours in Brazil
At least ten people have been killed and at least 21 are missing in Brazil after heavy downpours hit the southern state of Rio Grande do Sul, ABC News reports. Eleven have been injured and more than 3,300 have been forced to leave their homes.
In the municipality of Sinimbu, the streets have been flooded. Electricity, drinking water and internet are missing, and mayor Sandra Backes describes the situation as "nightmarish".
- Sinimbu is like a war zone, completely devastated [...] all shops, businesses, food stores, everything is destroyed, she says in a video on Instagram according to AFP.
President Lula: Depends on climate change
Brazilian President Lula da Silva writes on X that the government will send disaster aid to the worst-hit regions of Rio Grande do Sul, adding that climate change is behind the extreme weather, reports AFP.
The rivers in the region were saturated after previous storms. Experts describe climate change as driving the recent extreme weather in Brazil. In March, at least 25 people died when torrential rain hit the states of Rio de Janeiro and Espirito Santo.
