China: Necessary measures await after sanctions

China will take "necessary measures" to uphold Chinese companies following new US sanctions aimed at disrupting Chinese trade with Russia. Beijing announced this on Thursday, reports AFP.

In a statement, a representative of the Chinese Foreign Ministry says that China calls on the United States to stop "dirtying" the country and end "reckless, illegal and unilateral" sanctions.

The US sanctions against some 20 Chinese companies are part of a larger sanctions package that will make it more difficult for Russia to acquire new weapons for the war in Ukraine.

The United States has issued nearly 300 new sanctions aimed at closing Russia's loopholes, CNN reports. Among other things, sanctions are aimed at 20 companies in China and Hong Kong that have been accused of supporting the Russian army in the war in Ukraine. It is the most extensive US action against Chinese companies to date.

"The Treasury Department has repeatedly warned that companies will face significant consequences if they provide material support for Russia's war," Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen wrote in a statement.

Liu Pengyu, a spokesperson for China's embassy in Washington, says the country firmly opposes the sanctions and that trade between China and Russia is in line with World Trade Organization rules.

German air defense to Ukraine - specialized in drones

Germany has delivered a second copy of the Skynex air defense system to Ukraine, Kyiv Independent reports. The system is described as particularly suitable when it comes to defending against drones, something Russia uses to a large extent in its warfare.

According to the Ukrainian Air Force, Russia has fired more than 4,600 Shahed drones since February 24, 2022. The drones are cheap to use, but defending against them using, for example, the American Patriot system is expensive. The Skynex is better suited as its ammunition is significantly cheaper than that of the Patriot, while the system is very accurate.
